Arunodaya: A Morning of Light and Purpose
When I stepped into Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya, Ambathale, that morning, the air was already alive — the sound of chairs being moved, laughter spilling through the corridors, and a quiet anticipation that something meaningful was about to unfold.
We weren’t there for a ceremony.
We were there for a sunrise.
Project Arunodaya, jointly organized by the Lions Club of Kolonnawa and the Leo Club of Kolonnawa, was more than just another school program. It was a journey — a space to awaken something deeper in the hearts of young students: confidence, clarity, and leadership.
The Dawn Begins
Over 200 students, from Grades 8 to 13, gathered with wide eyes and shy smiles. The room buzzed with a kind of quiet energy — curiosity laced with nerves. We watched it shift as the sessions unfolded, each speaker lighting a small spark in the minds in front of us.
Miss Rashmi Nimesha Gunawardena took the stage first, guiding the students through the power of goal-setting and perseverance. She spoke not about being perfect — but about being persistent. About showing up, even when the road seems unclear. And her words landed exactly where they needed to.
Then came Lion Samith Mapalagama, who brought something tender to the room. He reminded us that leadership isn’t loudness or command — it’s uniqueness. He spoke of beauty and service, of believing in oneself before asking others to follow. His message lingered like sunlight filtering through windows.
Finally, our own District Governor, Lion Mahesh Boralugoda PMJF PMAF JP, offered words that didn’t need decoration. His presence was grounding. His message — calm, measured, and profound — wasn’t just heard. It was felt.
Between the Words — Moments That Mattered
In between the sessions, we — the Leos — walked through the hall. We sat with students, answered their questions, laughed with them, and shared stories.
One girl raised her hand quietly and asked me,
“Do you ever get scared before you speak in front of people?”
I smiled and told her the truth:
“Always.”
But that’s what courage is — not the absence of fear, but the willingness to speak anyway.
That exchange, and a dozen others like it, reminded me why we do this. It’s not about the mic. It’s about the connection.
A Morning That Changed Us
By the end of the day, the hall didn’t just feel full. It felt changed.
There was a stillness, a quiet pride in the way the students stood. Something had shifted — not just in them, but in us too.
Arunodaya — the dawn — had lived up to its name. It was not just a program. It was a beginning.
A beginning for the girls who dared to dream louder.
And a renewal for those of us who serve — reminding us that purpose doesn’t need applause. It just needs presence.
The Unity That Makes This Work
That morning reminded us of what makes this movement so strong:
- The Lions Club is the backbone — providing strength, structure, and direction.
- The Leos are the muscles — bringing energy, drive, and motion.
- And the projects we do together? They are the skin the world sees — the living proof of what unity, compassion, and purpose can create.
We left that hall a little taller that day.
Not because of praise.
Not because of applause.
But because we witnessed what happens when light meets opportunity.
That was Arunodaya.
A morning of light.
A movement with purpose.
A memory that won’t fade.
