Lassana Kolonnawa Phase 01
Revitalizing Gothatuwa Wetland Park
Hurray! The Lassana Kolonnawa initiative, as part of the Lassana Sri Lanka initiative, marked a significant step in environmental restoration in Sri Lanka. This project focused on rejuvenating the Gothatuwa Wetland Park, emphasizing the power of youth-led environmental change and community collaboration to create a cleaner, greener future.
Restoring Gothatuwa Wetland Park: A Key Initiative
On the morning of 14th December 2024, the Leo Club of Kolonnawa, along with the Lassana Kolonnawa Youth Network and the GEF Small Grants Programme (implemented by UNDP), embarked on a transformative cleanup drive at the Gothatuwa Wetland Park. This vital green space is not only an ecological treasure but also a critical component of Sri Lanka’s fight against climate change.
The cleanup drive began with a detailed briefing on the wetland’s ecological significance, highlighting the need for collective efforts to protect biodiversity and promote environmental sustainability. Participants, including community members and passionate volunteers, demonstrated a shared commitment to the cause, armed with gloves, tools, and determination.
Addressing Key Environmental Challenges
A significant focus of the day was managing invasive species, which pose a threat to the park’s biodiversity. The park authorities explained their efforts to control these species, either by letting them die off naturally or through active removal. These interventions ensure the ecosystem remains balanced, protecting native flora and fauna.

The team’s efforts went beyond removing visible waste. By addressing the root causes of ecological disruption, the initiative set a precedent for tackling environmental challenges in a holistic and sustainable way.
Youth-Led Environmental Change in Action
This cleanup was more than a physical effort—it was a platform for promoting youth-led environmental change. Conversations among volunteers focused on the importance of preserving wetlands, their role in mitigating climate change, and their contribution to local ecosystems.
The Lassana Kolonnawa initiative underscored the critical role of young leaders in driving environmental restoration in Sri Lanka. The passion and energy displayed by the Kolonnawa Leos and other participants inspired both action and awareness among the community.
Partnerships That Drive Change
The success of Lassana Kolonnawa Phase 01 would not have been possible without collaboration. The support from the GEF Small Grants Programme and Lassana Kolonnawa Youth Network amplified the impact of the cleanup drive, showcasing the importance of partnerships in achieving environmental goals.
This collaboration is a testament to the potential of youth-led initiatives when supported by experienced organizations. It highlights the need for more partnerships in environmental restoration in Sri Lanka to create lasting change.
A Vision for a Cleaner, Greener Future
The transformation of the Gothatuwa Wetland Park during Phase 01 is only the beginning. This initiative has sparked a movement within the community to take pride in their surroundings and take responsibility for their preservation.
As a member of the Leo Club of Kolonnawa, I feel inspired to continue contributing to this vision. The success of Lassana Kolonnawa is proof that youth-led environmental change can create a lasting legacy for future generations.
